This post is part of the 28 Days of STEM and STEAM Activities for Kids series. So the hole center must be 7.06 cm from the open end. If you have access to a printer that can use large formats (at least 35 cm on one side), you can print out a schematic with precise measures made with any CAD software. Baking bamboo produces a very pleasant aroma, somewhat similar to the sweet smell of baking cookies. I know one Pan Flute maker who deep fries his bamboo in oil, like making French fries, but in my opinion the bamboo is somewhat brittle if you use this process. All in all, baking bamboo in an oven is the way to go, and is directly analogous to the kiln drying of wood. Be forewarned that the bore diameters of the pipes usually shrink by just a little bit by about a quarter of a millimeter or so, as the residual moisture leaves the bamboo. Occasionally, a piece of bamboo will crack during baking, but this is actually quite rare; sometimes, small cracks or fissures may appear in a bamboo pipe after baking, but in my experience, these small cracks or fissures do not widen or go anywhere after baking, the bamboo is pretty much stabilized., Step Four: Pipe Selection
I'm going to make a full octave pan flute, so I need 13 tubes: C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#/Gb, G, G#/Ab, A, A#/Bb, B and C again. I love sharing crafts, science, STEM and STEAM activities, free printables and more! The formula for calculating the length of a pan flute pipe is L = (c / f) / 4 (the "theoretical length" L equals the speed of sound c = 343 m/s, divided by the desired frequency in hertz f, that quantity divided by 4; this simplifies and rearranges to: Length of pipe (in centimeters) Frequency (in hertz) = 8575). (Try PVC pipes or cardboard tubes.). amzn_assoc_region = "US"; Gut and remove the innards of your pens (save the insides for other projects!). Honestly, I don't understand why you need to know my nameHowever, I suppose you're asking for the sources of information about the data and the formulas used. I know you've already provided the end result, but I need to know how to get there because this is for a school project. After the pipes have been oiled, and the excess oil has been thoroughly removed, the next step is to finish or paint the pipes. The purpose of painting or finishing the pipes is mainly aesthetic in nature, but it can have acoustical benefits as well. A wide variety of different finishes may be used, such as acrylic lacquer, oil finishes, polyurethane, or various kinds of varnishes, including acoustical violin varnish. I highly recommend the latter, as it not only beautifies and preserves the bamboo, but also improves the overall sound and acoustics of the pipes. Or, you may simply wax or oil the outsides of the pipes, as you have done with their interiors, or apply no paint or finish at all, preferring to go natural. A glossy finish is most recommended for the bottom frame or boot of the Pan Flute, even if the pipes themselves are left in an unfinished, natural state; one of the things I have done with the frame or boot has been to apply a very thin layer of clear epoxy glue to it, using a very thin piece of plywood as a kind of palette knife applicator for doing this. The frame or boot may also be stained to get it to be the right color, and even brown or black shoe polish can be used for this purpose. If you have good basic woodworking and craftsmanship skills, you will be able to come up with a good creative and aesthetically pleasing solution. Im here to guide and assist you on your world flute journey in any way I can. Please write me at:
Enjoy the next hour of learning what it takes to put one of these together. Did you make this project? The table of pipe lengths and bore diameters, as shown on the Pipe Sizes and Dimensions page, will be your primary guide in fine cutting the pipes down to their proper length. Its always a good idea to make your cut a little outside the line, just to be on the side of safety. Still, the pipe lengths shown in the table will give a sufficient margin to allow for the shaping and sculpting of the bottoms of the pipes to produce an aesthetically pleasing curve after the pipes have been assembled, without any fear of coming up short length-wise., Step Six: Pipe Wall Thinning and Bore Work
Materials we need: - about 3 m of metal or plastic pipe (if you use metal try to avoid copper) - duct tape of any kind - strings/shoelaces/yarn/whatever you want to keep tubes together - 13 pieces of whatever you can use to close one and of a pipe (coins, metal or plastic scrap, wood, cardboard remember that it will cover the end from outside, and cannot be inserted like a cork on a bottle because this will shorten the air column and change the note produced). Which countries and cultures use them? This straw pan flute is so easy to make that kids can make it all on their own! First I had to figure out the unit / time for speed of sound which I derived to be 13830 inches / second then worked the formula 13830 / 4 * f, 13830 / 4 * 466.2 . Place the straws together from longest to shortest. First we find the frequencies of all notes we choose. Compare the sounds each pan flute makes. It is commonly known in folk music but originates from South America, where ancient Amazonic tribes made the instrument from bamboo to provide melodies to their traditional tribal songs. This time we know the frequency (if you don't then go to the second step). Pan Flute. Im going to suspend them to trees and have wind blow through or into them, creating a haunting sound. The initial sealing off of the bottom of a pipe so that no air can escape, and so the pipe may produce a clear sound when it is blown into can happen as early as the ninth step, which is that of framing the pipes. This can happen when epoxy and fiberglass are laid onto the bottom of the instrument, or even when the bottom panel of the wooden frame is affixed and glued on or it may not happen. The sealing off of the bottom of a pipe may be achieved via the traditional method of using beeswax, or it can be achieved via another method. Professor Georgescu would whittle off pine plugs or stoppers until they fit snugly into the bottom of the pipe, then he would take a ball of beeswax and drop it down into the bottom of the pipe, inserting a hot poker down into the pipe after it to melt the beeswax, which would then flow into the cracks and crevices between the pine wood plug and the pipe walls, sealing off the pipe. He did this with the individual pipes, even before assembly. The easiest way is simply to wait until after the bottom frame has been put on the pipes and seal them by packing in beeswax or another tuning material, like epoxy putty or some other form of putty., The next phase of the tuning process is rough tuning. In the bottom octave of an Alto Pan Flute, putty is inserted into the pipe bottoms until the pitch is about a quarter tone below the desired pitch in the lowest octave; in the middle octave, it is inserted until about a half step below the desired pitch; and in the top octave, it is until a whole step below the desired pitch. Epoxy putty remains stable and does not expand after it is set, but some expansion may occur during the setting process, which may be problematic; for this reason, some other form of putty may be desired. Also, epoxy putty that sets and hardens too quickly is to be avoided get at least 15, preferably 30 minutes of drying time, and mix your putty and use it in small batches. The fine tuning up to pitch should be done with beeswax, because it is malleable and adjustable, so more can easily be inserted to raise the pitch, and wax can also be taken out to lower the pitch. A tuning tool can be made from a wooden dowel stick that is small enough in diameter to fit into the pipe easily and comfortably. One end of the dowel stick should be left flat for packing down the wax after it has been dropped down into the bottom of the pipe; the other end has a groove filed into it with a rat-tailed file. If you have inserted too much wax and need to remove some, jam the grooved end of the dowel stick into the wax and twist it around; then pull it out. Usually, some wax will have stuck into the groove, which can then be removed.. To conciliate this last passion with music I made a pan flute, an ancient instrument belonging to various cultures. Place the shortest straw on the right hand side of the tape, with the same amount (about 3/4 inch) hanging over the edge. When the glue is dry remove the external carboard with a knife, a scalpel or a pair of scissors. Step Twelve: Oiling and Finishing the Pipes
Walkthrough for pan flute in Little Alchemy 2 water + water = puddle fire + fire = energy earth + earth = land earth + fire = lava air + lava = stone puddle + water = pond earth + land = continent pond + water = lake fire + stone = metal continent + continent = planet stone + stone = wall
I've brought aluminium pipes (light and good-looking), but they have a paint I don't like. My idea for this item is that it slowly breaks down over time. With some duct tape, maybe a colored one, cover the edge to avoid any air fugue. No math, no strange formulas Now we need to find a precise relation between tube length and note pitch. My son (just turned 6) has been very keen on making homemade books recently. What could you use? You can change the pitch by changing the length of the straw. Kids always love making homemade musical instruments. In order to have the right acoustical proportions and response, the narrowest part of a pipes bore needs to be its upper rim, with every part of the bore below it being at least that width, if not slightly wider but never narrower. If the middle or lower parts of a pipes bore should be narrower than the bore diameter at its top end, the pipes tone will sound false or glassy, and there will be instability of pitch and/or tone quality. And the octave-and-a-fifth produced by overblowing a pipe will fall flat of the true fifth. Although most species of bamboo produce pipes whose bores are narrowest at their top end or perfectly cylindrical, some species of bamboo, most notoriously Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) will often be narrower at their bottom ends in their natural state. If this should be the case, the bore needs to be widened at the pipes bottom end with a rat tailed file, and the bore delicately engineered to produce a perfectly cylindrical camber or one that is slightly wider at the bottom end. Doing this straightly and precisely is easier said than done, and takes a lot of painstaking precision. It is a good idea to precision measure the pipe bores at their top and bottom ends with calipers., Step Seven: Slatting and Fitting the Pipes
By bending the pipes, you are exploiting the slightly elastic nature of the material (be careful not to stretch too much and cause the resultant tension to shatter a brittle pipe! Only a really good ear can sense a difference of a few cents. This is how we made our straw pan flutes, although you dont have to make them exactly as we did. This is how we made our straw pan flutes, although you don't have to make them exactly as we did. The stuff i use is around 5/8" inside diameter. A short straw produces a high note.
By the way: the tin whistle sounds good, is well tuned, and it's a C-whistle. With each of the pipes thoroughly rounded off on their outer rims, on both their front and back sides, what I then do is to further file off or round off the pipe rims on the players side, in a unilateral direction straight toward the player. This will create a slight scalloping of the pipes inner rims, exposing a bit of the inner bore surface on the far side of each pipe. To do this, you can use either a small half round file or a small flat file wrapped with sandpaper of medium grit. Then, using a small flat rasp with medium grit sandpaper wrapped around it, I will then round off the far rims of the pipes in a similar fashion to what I have just done with the near rims, only much more slightly just enough to create the slightest dip in the profile of the far rims. Then, using the small flat file wrapped in medium grit sandpaper yet again, I will set a slight inclination downwards towards the players side in the space between the near and far rims of the pipes, effectively tilting or inclining the original level playing field ever so slightly towards the player. Then I will round off, again in a unilateral direction directly towards the player, even more deeply than I did at first, scalloping the near rims even more and revealing more of the inner bore surface of the far end of the pipes interior. I will then test the tone and playing response of this basic beveling pattern or shape by blowing on some pipes, and if I am satisfied with the results, I will then sand the surface even smoother with finer grades of sandpaper. The last step is to use medium fine sandpaper to gently round off the inner edges of the pipe rims so that everything is left smooth, and no sharp, harsh edges remain. amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; All the pan pipes start out here. If you are not interested in all the math and physics behind the project, you can jump directly to the practice section. (And less prep for you!). The n is the number of semitones between the note we want and the A4. Optional: Decorate your cardstock with markers, crayons, or paint. So, the best thing (maybe it's only a dream) is a mechanism that open both ends and holes with a single lever, and only the ends with another lever. They also have the opportunity to write and record their own music. They can see how the placement of the various lengths of the straws affects the ability to use the flute. Math:Kids will need to measure and compare lengths in order to create their straw pan flute. But what if we want a note higher than a C6? To get an estimate of the sizes I'd need, I cut a piece of pipe about 12" long, put my finger tightly over one end and blew across the edge of the open end. Step Nine: Framing or Reinforcing the Pipe Bottoms
We made our pan pipes to simply explore how the different lengths of each straw affect the sound you can create with it. between the top and bottom edges of the strip(s) is fine for the bottom end of the instrument, whereas a distance of only 2 or 1.5 cm. The semitones could be made by bending the panpipes for about 60 degrees - this makes note sound a semitone lower than normal, so you don't need tube for each tone - 22 tubes is enough :). This make the A an A4, with a frequency defined to be 440 Hz (modern concert pitch). To optimize the space and to use only three 1 m pipes, we will cut each pipe as follow: 1st pipe: 31.69 cm + 29.91 cm + 22.41 cm + 15.84 cm (low C + C#/Db + F#/Gb + high C, about 2 mm left) 2nd pipe: 28.23 cm + 26.65 cm + 25.15 cm + 19.96 cm (D + D#/Eb + E + G#/Ab, almost nothing left) 3rd pipe: 23.74 cm + 21.15 cm + 18.84 cm + 17.78 cm + 16.79 cm (F + G + A +A#/Bb + B, less than 2 cm left) As you can see, I wrote also the note corresponding to each section. If you want to add two or more holes for each tube, than the things became complex. Step One: Buying and Selecting the Bamboo
We cannot start making something if we don't have anything to start with. Cut the Bamboo to Size Cut the bamboo into tubes of different sizes based on the dimensions already indicated. If you can spot my error, please clue me in :). So, the image of this step is from my previous instrument, a six-holed pennywhistle made of aluminium, wood (juniper), and electrician tape. 4 years ago. 3 years ago, 3 years ago Although some precision adjustment of wall thicknesses, beyond merely skinning the outer peel or surface off of the bamboos exterior, is unavoidable in making a precision crafted Pan Flute, you want the walls to be of intermediate thickness, from 2.5 mm at the top end to 3.5 mm. I like really zillions of things, very different one another. Hi, I seem to be having a problem with calculating the length. 2. . Make more drums. (We cut ours into the following lengths: 6 inches, 5.5 inches, 5 inches, 4 inches, and 3.5 inches.) For my after school kindergarten enrichment class, we used this pan flute kit from Discount School Supply. We use cookies to ensure that we give you the best experience on our website. They must have a medium thickness and constant diameter throughout the wall. The external diameter of those pipes is 2 cm, maybe too wide (and bigger than the one I've realized). Also, a slightly more detailed explanation of what number gets plugged into which symbol and the relation between the two formulae would be appreciated. When building a set of pan pipes, leave an extra bit of material more than what is indicated here. However, "my" frequencies are 261.6, 277.2, 293.7, 311.1, 329.6, 349.2, 370, 392, 415.3, 440, 466.2, 493.9, 523.3 rounded to first decimal digit, measured in hertz. A common comment that I hear from people when they find out that I make my own Pan Flutes is that it must be very hard to cut the pipe to precisely the right length to produce the desired note or pitch. Actually, the lengths of the pipes constitute the least exacting aspect of Pan Flute making. Just as long as the pipes are longer than the minimum length that they need to be for producing their desired pitch, plus a comfortable tuning margin, they are then tuned up to pitch by the insertion of tuning material, which is packed down into the bottoms of the pipes. The pipes of the upper octave of an Alto Pan Flute are more than halfway full of tuning material; if they were the exact length that they needed to be to produce the desired pitch, they would be too short to hold comfortably with the fingers. The traditional tuning material used in the Romanian Pan Flute is beeswax; its advantages are that it is flexible and malleable, and readily sticks to the bottoms of the pipes, sealing off the bottoms as well. Its main drawback is that it expands quite a lot in hot weather, which tends to raise the pitch of the pipes.. Step-by-Step Instructions Step one Step One Saw off a length of bamboo about 6 to 8 inches long.
If you have a tube-cutter, try to put it with the blade exactly where it should go and use a working glove to turn the knob: it's very tough. When you find the right place, take a piece of yarn and wrap it around the ends of the first group of five of tubes (C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E). 2. Although bamboo can be harvested in the wild, from the grove, for most people, ordering bamboo from a bamboo dealer, or going there in person to buy the bamboo or select the poles, is the way to go. Bamboo poles in the diameters usually used for Pan Flutes generally comes in lengths of 6 to 8 feet long. For a standard size Alto Pan Flute (G to g), select poles from inch in diameter down to 5/8 inch to inch to 3/8 inch. For the lower pipes of a Tenor Pan Flute, you will have to buy one inch diameter poles as well, and for the lowest pipes of a Bass Pan Flute, you may even need to go to 1 inch or 1 inch. Some bamboo dealers will let you select individual poles to buy if you go in person, whereas others will deal in bamboo by the bale, which is anywhere from about 25 to 50 poles or so. To be sure, you wont be able to use all the bamboo you buy, but if you can use even half of it, you are doing well usually its more like a third of the bamboo you buy that is usable for quality pipes. The numbers should, Before I forget it, here's the link to the awsome. First, if we make a single hole, its size doesn't matter. Teach yourself Pan Flute. While making the pan flutes (sometimes called panpipes), theyll have the opportunity to use both math and fine motor skills, while also building and creating. Now you should have three partial pan flutes: one with 8 tubes, one with 2 tubes and one with 3 tubes. I made my pan flute from 1/2" diameter PVC water supply pipe.
After building their own pan flutes and exploring the science of sound, children will then have the opportunity to write their own songs and record the notes for those songs on the free printable recording sheet. If you hear 2 notes when you play the C, D or E tube, then lower the 2-tubes group. Please help me! Lay them out next to each other, with the top edges lined up. Pan Flutes for beginners and professionals, hand-made and beautifully crafted. A pan flute is a mere group of tubes with a closed end (called closed cylinder, even if one end is open). Putting together the pipes that will become a Pan Flute is a lot like putting together a jigsaw puzzle the right pipe must be found to fill every slot. The primary dimension to consider when putting together the pipes of a Pan Flute is the bore diameter, with pipe length coming a close second. Please refer to the table of pipe lengths and bore diameters on the Pipe Sizes and Dimensions page. Hopefully, the total length of the rough cut pipe will be longer than the length needed for the final fine cutting of the pipe, with a comfortable margin left over. Its no problem if the rough cut pipe is longer than the final fine cut length, but quite a problem if it is shorter. The pipes selected for a certain instrument need to be as similar to each other as possible, with its size being the main vector that changes throughout the instruments gamut or range and size is defined as a composite of a pipes length and diameter, especially its bore diameter. Pipes dont have to be perfectly straight, but adjacent pipes should be curving in a similar or congruent direction., Step Five: Fine Cutting the Pipes
I used to play pan flutes. How to make a pan flute How to make smoking pipes from wood Pan Pipes 60K views Instrumentos Alternativos How To Make A Homemade PVC Flute It's cable reimagined No DVR space limits. amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "buggyandbuddy-20"; A key feature of the authentic Romanian style Pan Flute is that the pipes are slatted or flattened on their lateral sides and fastened together by gluing; this provides the player with a smooth, contiguous surface along which his or her lips can effortlessly glide from pipe to pipe. However, this step, this process of slatting and fitting the pipes to prepare them for gluing or assembly is also the most laborious and time consuming of the twelve steps involved in making a Pan Flute. For this reason, someone who wants to make a quick and dirty version of a Pan Flute will usually find an easier, quicker alternative to slatting, fitting and gluing, which is usually rafting the pipes together by tying them to splints. Although such instruments are perfectly playable, they are not the authentic Pan Flute, and do not have the potential for efficient playing or virtuosity that the true Pan Flute has. Slatting refers to the initial process of cutting the lateral slats in the pipes, whereas fitting refers to the process of getting the slats you have cut down to their requisite depths, and of precision fitting them to their neighboring pipes.
My kids loved writing their own songs and performing them for me. Could you build a pan flute on a larger scale? Write the numbers of each note onto the printable recording sheet. Aubrey Smalls 875 subscribers Subscribe 2.2K Share 87K views 2 years ago I show you step by step on how to make a pan flute out of straws. After assembly, if any holes or gaps between the pipes should remain, these can be filled in with glue in a kind of second gluing, but the better you fit the pipes, the less of this has to be done. I also like making things. Don't stand in one place, move around constantly to get more mileage out of the jingle dress. This way you can have a pan flute whose range is, for example, C4-C7, three octaves! Other Flutes | Bio | Links | Contact, QUESTIONS, COMMENTS AND FEEDBACK WELCOME! This can be done easily with Excel, Derive, Mathematica, even with Windows' Calc. Mark with a pencil, then cut the straws to different lengths. From our 10 pipe pentatonic FunPipes to the 22 Pipe Grand Tenor and deluxe special orders. This is such a simple science activity, yet it teaches kids so much! Simply blow air through the straws and discover what melodies can be created! I recommended starting with a small pan flute no bigger than two octaves (13 - 15 pipes.) ), I keep getting very small results, like .15 for C4, and I think i'm missing something but I can't tell what. So the disposition I chose is similar to that of key on a keyboard, but the accidentals (black keys) are nearest to the player and have been lowered. If you want to know how to retrive all measurement, or even to customize your pipes, then proceed with next step. is appropriate for the top end. The reinforcing strip(s) for the bottom side of the frame can also be done in a similar manner, tracing around the entire periphery of the instrument with a pencil to get the proper silhouette or outline. Just remember to cut the front and back strips at least a centimeter or two longer than needed, to cut off to the right length when the end pieces are added; similarly, the bottom strip(s) are to be cut at least two to three millimeters wider than needed, and then trimmed off later. An Exacto knife and/or saw are the best cutting implements to use for cutting the strips., I have usually made the end pieces for my Pan Flute frames from bamboo whose inner or bore diameter is large enough to fit snugly around the outside of the top and bottom pipes; however, other makers have carved them out of wood. The bottom edges of the end pieces are filed or rasped off to be flush with the bottom surface of the instrument, but their top ends can be carved into various aesthetic designs, which are usually spired or pointed. It is usually recommended that the last strip to go on in the assembly of the frame is the (last) bottom strip, which is cut to cover the bottom edges of the end pieces, providing an unbroken and uniform surface on the instruments bottom end. The fitting of the end pieces and their joinery with the front and back reinforcing strips is another point to test and show the level of craftsmanship of the Pan Flute artisan. I trust that you will work out your own best procedure or protocol for doing this joinery work as your craftsmanship and experience unfold and develop.
